Sandy Cornish was born with cerebral palsy, in the NSW country town of Orange just over fifty years ago. Her achievements in her lifetime have been greater than those of most able-bodied people. She cannot speak. Her method of communication is by tapping out messages with the middle finger of her right hand on a ‘communicator' strapped to her left wrist. In a story as moving as ‘Angela's Ashes' Sandy tells of her struggle to survive her first years and how one doctor diagnosed her as lacking a brain. It tells of the loneliness and the companionship of her years at the Spastic Centre. She learned to dance and made her debut at a fundraiser ball. She has completed a Bible Ministry Course. Her determination to become a bride of Jesus and her joy when she took her vows and joined the Carmelite Order as Mary Juliana of Carmel. She has done youth work and taught religion in schools. Sandy recently underwent two spinal operations at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, in an effort to stem the approach of quadriplegia. Although she is extremely ill, at home in Orange she has requested that part of the proceeds from her book be donated to help those she considers less fortunate: an orphanage for disabled children in Vietnam and one in East Timor. This is a deeply moving story of Sandy emerging from the cocoon of her palsy and her flight to loving freedom in Jesus.
